CANCELLED:  Annual History Lecture Weekend

Friday 28 – Sunday 30 October 2022

The History Council of NSW is proud to be staging the Annual History Lecture this year in the Central Tablelands city of Orange, and we are also proud to say that we have extended it from one event, to a series of events that will last three days.

This is a weekend that you can immerse yourself in History in the glorious, culturally rich and diverse Orange-Bathurst region, and we expect that people from far and wide will join us as we hear from leading historians, and tour the region.

There are three components to the Annual History Lecture Weekend:

  1. CANCELLED – A free return bus trip from Sydney to Orange for registered attendees (28 & 30 October)
  2. The Annual History Lecture (28 October)  STILL ON!!!
  3. CANCELLED – A “Hidden Histories” tour of the Orange-Bathurst area by bus on Saturday 29 October, featuring local, First Nations and Sydney historians.

Find out more and register to attend our events below.

(Please note that you need to book your own accommodation, and Orange is a busy tourist town, so act fast!)

CANCELLED:  Free return bus – Sydney-Orange-Sydney (28 & 30 October)

(Note:  only for the use of Annual History Weekend event registrants).

Join History Council staff, members and other event registrants as we travel, free of charge, between Sydney and Orange and back again for the Annual History Lecture weekend.  We will be leaving Central Station on Friday 28 October in a touring bus, and travelling to Orange via the Blue Mountains and Bathurst.  On the way, there will be an opportunity to do an initial exploration of Bathurst, and enjoy lunch in the Tremain’s Mill precinct.  (Food and refreshments at own cost).  The return trip will be on Sunday, 30 October, with travelers arriving back at Central Station at approximately 5.30pm.

The bus has a COVID Safety plan in place. Click the button to the right to register for the trip.

The Annual History Lecture (Friday, 28 October, 6pm)

The Annual History Lecture is an event produced & presented by the History Council of New South Wales every year, which aims to engage and educate the community about the vitality, diversity and meaning of history and its practice through the eyes of a leading Australian Historian.

In 2022 the Annual History Lecture will be presented by Bruce Pascoe.  You can find more information about the lecture here, and register via the button to the right.

CANCELLED – The “Hidden Histories” Tour (Saturday, 29 October)

To augment the Annual History Lecture, we have created a full day tour of the Orange-Bathurst region, entitled “Hidden Histories”.  This tour will use the same bus that will take us to and from Sydney, but is open to all to attend.  (Bookings are essential, via the button to the right)

During the tour you will hear from leading local, not-so-local and First Nations historians as we peel back the layers of History in the region to reveal its key people, conflicts, transformations and buildings.  We are keeping the price within reach of most people, with attendees purchasing their own meals and refreshments at scheduled stops along the way.  More details about the schedule will be added to this site as they come to hand.

In 2022, the Annual History Lecture Weekend was staged in Orange, NSW.  It was supported by

the NSW Government through Create NSW and Destination NSW, and also by the Orange City Council.
