Grey Clancy uncovers the little known story of Annette Wagner. Born in Switzerland, Annette was a traveller, fashion expert and media identity on the ABC and commercial radio in Australia in 1938-39. She was also a Nazi spy.
Her access to national radio broadcasts gave her a secure channel to transmit coded messages. Annette’s two years in Australia were spent immersed in intrigue and shielded by a skilfully managed façade of deception. Tracked by Military Intelligence, her outstanding credentials in espionage ensured that exposing her ultimate role would never be easy.
This story of Nazi espionage in Australia remained lost in the National Archives for nearly 70 years, but can now be told.
